Mouser Introduces TI TCAN4550 System Basis Chip

The TCAN4550 device supports data transfer rates up to 5Mbps and SPI clock speeds up to 18MHz, and is the industry’s first system basis chip that integrates a CAN FD controller and transceiver. These highly integrated controllers are suitable for building automation, industrial transportation and factory automation, and the TCAN4550-Q1 version is AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive applications.

The TI TCAN4550 controller, available from Mouser Electronics, has differential transmit capability to transmit to the bus, and differential receive capability to receive from the bus. These controllers feature a wide CAN bus operating range, including ±42 V bus fault protection and ±12 V common mode. These chips use the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) to provide an interface between the system processor and the CAN bus, supporting both CAN FD and Classic CAN. The TCAN4550 controller has multiple operating modes, including standby and sleep, and achieves low power consumption through the use of wake-up and inhibit functions. These controllers are able to support the bandwidth and data flexibility requirements of in-vehicle networks, implementing a CAN FD interface on the system using the SPI bus of almost any microcontroller.

The TCAN4550 controller also has a companion TCAN4550EVM evaluation module that can be connected to any microcontroller or SPI controller with an I/O voltage of 3.3 V or 5 V using a standard interface header. The TCAN4550EVM has an EMC filtered and polarity protected supply voltage and is capable of operating with external voltages from 6 V to 24 V.
